The idea occurred to us where our best ideas always originate: on the boat while cruising. "Let's create a magazine to unite the owners of cruising sailboats like ours: older boats, wonderful boats, well-loved, and frequently sailed boats." And so Good Old Boat magazine was born for sailors who own, maintain, sail, and love terrific boats which are 10, 20, 30, or more years old.

Keeping Our Good Old Boats Afloat

Good old boats are often in need of upgrades and routine maintenance. These questions come up: Where do I get the parts? Who has done this before and can offer advice? How do others with boats like mine solve this particular problem? What improvements can be made?

We will welcome multihulls and other good old cruising sailboats, even those made of wood! Check out our growing list of sailboat owners' associations. It's amazing! We have contacts for more than 800 distinctly different boats (and many more if you count all sizes by one manufacturer, such as Catalinas or J/Boats). The actual count is closer to 1,300. And we're seeking contacts for many more. Who knows how many more are out there that we haven't even heard of yet? When we started this list, we could name perhaps a couple dozen good old boats.

Offering a Resource . . . With Your Help, That Is

With your help, we are serving as a network so sailors can locate others with similar boats and similar issues. Simply stated, we are creating a community of sailors of good old boats.

The sailors of good old boats share many interests, problems, and goals. Working with our boats, the members of this sailing community have gained a powerful depth of experience and know-how. You are part of our community, and you hold a piece of our combined knowledge. Together we are an awesome fleet! We're waiting to hear from you. Contact us. Please share your knowledge on these and other subjects:

  • Tell us about on your boat.
  • Ask other sailors for advice about .
  • Tell us about sailboat owners' associations that we haven't located for our list.
  • about marine vendors we should add to our free suppliers' directory.
  • Tell us about we can profile in our magazine.
  • Offer to write articles for Good Old Boat.
  • Offer to take photos or illustrate for Good Old Boat.

Or just plain contact us to "talk sailing."

Here's the Plan

We publish every other month. Please join us by asking for a free sample issue, or by subscribing online or by mail right away! We are on the newsstands, too, but it's certainly more efficient to go directly to the source.

What is Included

Features About Fellow Sailors

In each issue we profile one special boat and the interesting people who sail and love her. Whether they sail on weekend vacations or extended cruises, they all have a story to tell. Each story revolves around the boat which makes it possible to live the dream and perhaps to dream the fantasy of untying the docklines in search of paradise. These people are people we know and people you know and tell us about. They may be you or very much like you.

Boat Reviews

We started a separate boat review feature so we can cover twice as many boats. This is important, we think, since we're often overcome by the realization that there are "so many boats, so little time." We STILL weren't covering as many of the good old boats as we'd like, so we're adding a review of trailerable boats as well. That premiered in our March 2003 issue.

Maintenance and Upgrade Resources

The magazine also focuses on what it takes to maintain and upgrade the boats which have become such an important part of our lives. We are compiling lists of resources which apply for all our boats as well as those for specific models of boats. We're pooling the knowledge of our readers and website visitors to make that possible. Visit our suppliers' directory or tell us about vendors you like.

Technical Information for Sailors

We're offering technical material from some of the well-known sailing writers and common-sense wisdom from the rest of us. We're discovering new, talented writers . . . perhaps you'll share your technical expertise and sailing insights. We're looking for writers, artists, and photographers in many ports. If you'd like to publish your writing, art, or photos, please contact us. Join us on our voyage of discovery!

Sailboat Owners' Groups

Good Old Boat helps bring sailors together by promoting the class associations and helping sailors make contacts with other sailors. With your help, we're compiling "the World's Greatest" directory of formal and informal owners' associations for those who are looking for kindred spirits and advice. We have nearly 1,300 listings representing approximately 800 boats.
